Predatory publishing has evolved from obvious scams to AI-polished fraud, blending seamlessly into legitimate science. In this talk we’ll cover how AI fuels fake authorship, paper mills, and deepfake peer reviews, making deception harder to detect than ever. We’ll explore the real-world consequences: retracted yet circulating "zombie" articles, eroded public trust, and the arms race between fraudsters and defenders, which will lead us to look at some emerging tools and strategies to combat these sophisticated threats.
Lorna Wildgaard is a consultant at Research Service, Copenhagen University Library, part of the Royal Danish Library, Denmark. She has a PhD in bibliometrics and before working at the Library was a researcher at University of Copenhagen. She is actively involved in developing skills and recognition for Open Science competencies and is increasingly involved in AI literacy. Her work in the Research Service unit concerns primarily education and skill development, including systematic search methodologies, AI in literature search and developing courses for Ph.d-students and undergraduates.
